Frequently asked questions

How the platform works, in detail.

About Borrou

What is Borrou?

A platform for renting things for a few days instead of buying them. Someone who owns something they barely use lists it for rent; someone who needs it for a limited time books it and pays only for those days.

What does it cost to use the platform?

Using Borrou is free: no fees, no subscription, no lock-in. Signing up, searching, listing items and talking to the other party cost nothing.

We only charge when a rental happens, as a fee on the listed price that covers payment handling, identity verification and protection if something goes wrong. The exact amount is always itemised before you pay, and nothing further is charged afterwards except a late-return or damage surcharge, if either arises.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Borrou runs straight in the browser, on both phone and computer, with nothing to download.

Which areas is it available in?

Activity is concentrated in Madrid and Tenerife for now. You can list from anywhere, although the widest choice of items is in those two areas.

Renting an item

How do I make a booking?

You pick your dates on the listing's calendar and send the request. The owner accepts or declines it, and payment is only requested once they have accepted. Nothing is charged before that.

Why is identity verification mandatory?

Because on the other side there is a person handing over something they own. Verification is required before your first booking and is done once, with an ID document and a selfie through Stripe Identity.

Borrou never sees or stores that documentation: Stripe carries out the verification.

When am I charged?

When the owner accepts the request and you complete the card payment. That amount is not passed to the owner at that point: it is held by the platform until the return is confirmed.

Can I cancel a booking?

Yes. The refund depends on how long is left until the start date:

  • More than 3 days in advance: the full amount is refunded, minus only the cost of processing the card payment, which the payment provider does not return when a refund is issued. That deduction never exceeds 5 €.
  • 2 or 3 days in advance: 50% of the total is refunded.
  • The day before or the same day: no refund is due.

If the owner is the one who cancels, 100% of the total is always refunded, fee and protection included, whatever the notice given.

What happens if an item is returned late?

A surcharge applies for each day of delay, equal to one extra rental day at the listed price. The surcharge can never exceed the total amount paid for the booking.

It is calculated on the actual days of delay and charged to the card when the owner confirms the return. If anything unexpected comes up, it is best to say so in the chat in advance.

Listing an item

Does listing cost anything?

Listing is free and there are no fees or lock-in: the platform only charges when a rental happens. At that point a commission of 15% on the listed price is deducted. When you set the price, it always shows what you receive after the deduction.

Who sets the price and the availability?

The owner. They set the daily price - and, if they want, a lower weekly or monthly rate - and block out the dates they do not want to rent. Each request is approved or declined individually.

When do I get paid?

When the return of the item is confirmed. At that point the amount is transferred to the owner's bank account, usually within 1 to 2 working days. To receive payments you first need to set up your bank details through Stripe.

Do I have to photograph the item at handover?

Yes. When you mark the item as picked up, the platform asks for photos of its condition at that moment.

Those images are the evidence of the state the item was handed over in. Without them, later damage comes down to each side's account; with them, it can be shown.

Delays and incidents

What do I do if an item comes back damaged?

Instead of confirming the return, report the incident from the booking: describe what happened, attach a photo and propose the amount you think is right.

The renter can accept the amount, in which case it is charged to their card and the incident is settled; or dispute it, and then the Borrou team reviews it against the handover photos. The payment stays held for as long as the review takes.

The window to report an incident is 48 hours from the return date.

How much does Borrou's protection cover?

The protection covers damage, loss or theft of the item during the rental up to a maximum of 300 € per booking. Above that amount, the platform offers no cover for the time being.

Anyone listing items worth more than that carries the difference themselves and should consider their own insurance covering rental to third parties. It does not cover normal wear and tear, damage that was not documented with photos at handover, or deals arranged outside the platform. The full detail is in clause 10 of the terms and conditions.

What happens if an item is never returned?

As long as the return is not confirmed, the payment stays held and the late surcharge keeps growing each day. It is worth writing in the chat first, as a good share of delays come down to a mix-up over dates.

If it is not resolved, write to info@borrou.es quoting the booking number.

Does Borrou ever own the money or the item?

No. Borrou acts as an intermediary: it puts both sides in touch and handles the payment through Stripe, without ever owning the items. The amount is held only for the period between payment and confirmation of the return.

The account

How do I delete an account?

From Edit profile, at the bottom. The profile, listings, conversations and associated photos are deleted.

If there have been rentals, those bookings are kept without the personal data: they are the accounting record of a payment and the law requires keeping it. An account with bookings in progress cannot be deleted.

What data is stored?

Only what the platform needs to work: name, email address and the bookings made. Card details are held by Stripe, not Borrou, and identity documents are not stored here either.

The full detail is in the privacy policy.
